Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark was born on June 22, 1911, in Tatoi Palace, Greece. She was the third child and daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Cecilie was a member of the Greek royal family by birth and belonged to the House of Glücksburg.
In 1931, Cecilie married Georg Donatus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse, and they had three children together. The couple lived in Germany and were part of the social circles of European royalty before World War II.
Tragically, Princess Cecilie died on November 16, 1937, in an airplane crash near Ostend in Belgium. The crash occurred as the family was traveling to attend a wedding in London; sadly, Cecilie was pregnant at the time, and the entire young family, along with several other relatives, perished in the accident.
Princess Cecilie was part of a notable European royal lineage, and her family connections made her related to several significant historical figures. She was a sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who married Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Consequently, through her brother, she is an aunt by marriage to King Charles III.
Cecilie is remembered for her life as a member of European royalty and the tragic circumstances of her untimely death.
